Certainly this process is different than what happens in public-sector companies. But, I've worked lots of places and people don't get fired often. You usually have to do something pretty terrible to be shown the door if not under the guise of a layoff.
I wish we would put more effort into helping those in the classroom do a better job instead of just looking to replace people. It seems a failure of the system to stick people in a room, with often little adult interaction, and say "go".
P.S. - Your bio says that you graduated from Prin. My wife too - just curious as to the year.
